{"id":457,"date":"2009-05-15T11:16:16","date_gmt":"2009-05-15T15:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/?p=457"},"modified":"2009-05-15T13:33:52","modified_gmt":"2009-05-15T17:33:52","slug":"inspirational-science-fiction-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/2009\/05\/inspirational-science-fiction-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspirational Science Fiction needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One interesting conversation I had at <a title=\"My session at SciBarCamp Toronto\" href=\"http:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/?p=421\" target=\"_blank\">SciBarCamp<\/a> was on how to get science fiction writers talking more to climate scientists, so they can take the latest science and turn it into compelling stories. The idea would be to tell it like it is. Instead of <a title=\"Greg's blog post on why he doesn't read much science fiction any more\" href=\"http:\/\/pyre.third-bit.com\/blog\/archives\/2253.html\" target=\"_blank\">techno-optimizism or space opera<\/a>, stories set in the current century that explain what the climate crisis will really do to us.<\/p>\n<p>Several people talked about the need for some more positive visions, rather than the\u00a0<a title=\"New Scientist, on how to survive the century\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg20126971.700-how-to-survive-the-coming-century.html\" target=\"_blank\">apocalyptic<\/a>\u00a0stuff. So, how about a set of stories from the latter half of the 21st Century, set in the world in which we won the battle. We made it to a completely carbon-neutral world. There were heroic efforts along the way by colourful individuals. There were political battles, and maybe a few bloody revolutions. But we avoided burning the <a title=\"Allen et al, Nature, 458, March 2009\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v458\/n7242\/full\/nature08019.html\" target=\"_blank\">trillionth tonne<\/a>. The world is a little warmer, and we lost a few coastlines, but we avoided the <a title=\"Vicky Pope on critical thresholds\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/environment\/climate-change\/carbon-cuts-only-give-5050-chance-of-saving-planet-1640154.html\" target=\"_blank\">critical thresholds<\/a> that trigger runaway warming.
