{"id":263,"date":"2009-04-15T14:49:42","date_gmt":"2009-04-15T18:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/?p=263"},"modified":"2011-01-06T16:22:14","modified_gmt":"2011-01-06T21:22:14","slug":"dynamics-of-global-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/2009\/04\/dynamics-of-global-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having talked with some of our graduate students about how to get a more inter-disciplinary education while they are in grad school, I&#8217;ve been collecting links to collaborative grad programs at U of T:<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.utoronto.ca\/mcis\/dgc\/\">Dynamics of Global Change Doctoral Program<\/a>, housed in the <a title=\"Munk Centre Main page\" href=\"http:\/\/webapp.mcis.utoronto.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Munk Centre<\/a>. The core course, <a title=\"Course syllabus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.utoronto.ca\/mcis\/dgc\/courses\/pdf\/globalchange_syllabus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">DGC1000H<\/a> is very interesting &#8211; it starts with Malcolm Gladwell&#8217;s Tipping Point book, and then tours through money, religion, pandemics, climate change, the internet and ICTs, and development. What a wonderful journey.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Centre for the Environment main page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.environment.utoronto.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Centre for the Environment<\/a> runs a <a title=\"Centre for the Environment Collaborative Program\" href=\"http:\/\/www.environment.utoronto.ca\/Graduate\/Programs\/EnvironmentalStudiesCollaborativeProgram.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Collaborative Graduate Program<\/a> (MSc and PhD) in which students take some environmental science courses in addition to satisfying the degree requirements of their home department. The core course for this program is <a title=\"ENV1001 syllabus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.environment.utoronto.ca\/Upload\/graduatesyllabus\/ENV%201001H%20F_Syllabus%20Fall_08.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">ENV1001, Environmental Decision Making<\/a>, and it also include an <a title=\"Environmental Internship program\" href=\"http:\/\/www.environment.utoronto.ca\/Graduate\/InternshipGuidelines.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">internship<\/a> to get hands on experience with environmental problem solving.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"KMDI website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kmdi.utoronto.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knowledge Media Design Institute<\/a> (KMDI) also has a <a title=\"KMDI collaborative doctoral program\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kmdi.utoronto.ca\/graduate\/\" target=\"_blank\">collaborative doctoral program<\/a>, perfect for those interested in design and evaluation of new knowledge media, with a strong focus on\u00a0knowledge creation,\u00a0social change, and community<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the\u00a0<a title=\"CGCS website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cgcs.utoronto.ca\/about.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Centre for Global Change Science<\/a> has a set of\u00a0<a title=\"CGCS grad student awards\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cgcs.utoronto.ca\/education\/CGCS_Education__Graduate_Student_Award_Programme.htm\" target=\"_blank\">graduate student awards<\/a>, to help fund grad students interested in global change science.
