The night Mike wore his lab coat,
\nand made scientific discoveries of one kind and another,
\nthe denialists called him a fraudster
\nand Mike said: “I’ll prove you wrong!”
\nSo they sent his emails to the media without any context.
\nThat very night on his blog,
\na jungle of obfuscating comments grew,
\nand grew,
\nuntil the discussions became enflamed,
\nand spilled out into the internet all around.
\nAnd an ocean of journalists tumbled by,
\nwith a high public profile for Mike,
\nand he argued away through night and day,
\nand in and out of weeks,
\nand almost over a year,
\neverywhere the denialists are.
\nAnd whenever he came to a place where the denialists are,
\nthey talked their terrible talking points,
\nand quoted their terrible quotes,
\nand showed their terrible cherry picking,
\nand demonstrated their terrible ignorance.
\nUntil Mike said “Be still!”
\nand tamed them with his Nature trick
\nof showing them actual data sets without blinking once.
\nAnd they were baffled, and called him the biggest denialist of all,
\nand declared him king of the denialists.
\n“And now”, said Mike, “let the data speak for itself.”
\nAnd he sent the denialists off to look at the evidence without their talking points.
\nThen Mike, the king of all denialists said,
\n“I’m lonely”,
\nand wanted to be where someone actually appreciated rational discussion.
\nThen all around, from far away, across the world
\nHe saw evidence of good solid scientific work.
\nSo he said “I’ll give up arguing with the denialists”
\nBut the denialists cried
\n“Oh please don’t stop – we’ll eat you up, we need you so”.
\nAnd Mike said “No!”
\nAnd the denialists talked their terrible talking points,
\nand quoted their terrible quotes,
\nand showed their terrible cherry picking,
\nand demonstrated their terrible ignorance.
\nBut Mike stepped back into his research, and waved goodbye.
\nAnd worked on, almost over a year and in and out of weeks and through a day,
\nin the sanity of his very own lab.
\nWhere he found his peer-reviewed papers waiting for him.
\nAnd they were all accepted.<\/p>\n
