{"id":2304,"date":"2011-03-01T00:04:24","date_gmt":"2011-03-01T05:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/?p=2304"},"modified":"2011-03-01T00:04:24","modified_gmt":"2011-03-01T05:04:24","slug":"climate-heroes-tim-dechristopher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/2011\/03\/climate-heroes-tim-dechristopher\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Heroes: Tim DeChristopher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of <a title=\"Serendipity: The Ethics of Climate Change\" href=\"http:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/?p=2234\" target=\"_blank\">Garvey&#8217;s book on Climate Ethics<\/a> that he concludes that direct action is necessary, and by his ethical standards, non-violent civil disobedience is appropriate. So I was inspired to read <a title=\"Peter Sinclair has a great overview\" href=\"http:\/\/climatecrocks.com\/2011\/02\/22\/tim-dechristopher-a-monkey-wrencher-comes-to-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\">the story of Tim DeChristopher<\/a>, who disrupted the auction of the oil rights for land in Utah around the spectacular Arches National Park. He pretended to be a bona fide bidder, and successfully bid for a $1.8 million of oil and gas leases, and pushed up the prices on others. Of course had no intention of buying them &#8211; the idea was to draw attention to the sale of these lands, and, as it turns out, to show that this auction, <a title=\"See the first hand accounts at &quot;It's getting hot in here&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/itsgettinghotinhere.org\/2011\/02\/28\/united-states-vs-tim-dechristopher\/\" target=\"_blank\">along with a whole bunch of other similar auctions, was illegal anyway<\/a>. Despite the finding that the auctions were illegal, Tim is now up for trial, facing a penalty of ten years in jail.<\/p>\n<p>His trial starts today, and there&#8217;s <a title=\"Peaceful Uprising\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peacefuluprising.org\/climate-trial\" target=\"_blank\">a huge campaign underway to protest at the trial<\/a>, and to support Tim in his fight for justice.
