{"id":124,"date":"2009-03-23T17:28:39","date_gmt":"2009-03-23T21:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/?p=124"},"modified":"2009-03-27T13:13:09","modified_gmt":"2009-03-27T17:13:09","slug":"great-women-in-climate-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.easterbrook.ca\/steve\/2009\/03\/great-women-in-climate-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Great women in climate science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honour of <a title=\"Ada Lovelace Day\" href=\"http:\/\/findingada.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ada Lovelace day<\/a>, I decided to write a post today about Prof <a title=\"Met Office annoucement with photo of Julia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/corporate\/pressoffice\/2008\/pr20080722.html\" target=\"_blank\">Julia Slingo<\/a>, the new chief scientist at the UK Met Office. News of Julia&#8217;s appointment came out in the summer last year during my visit to the Met Office, coincidentally on the same day that I met her, at a workshop on the <a title=\"HiGEM project page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.higem.nerc.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">HiGEM<\/a> project (where, incidentally, I saw some very cool <a title=\"GFDL's simulation of southern Atlantic Sea Surface Temperatures\" href=\"http:\/\/vis.lbl.gov\/%7Eprabhat\/GFDL\/Movies\/scenarios\/Agulhas.mpg\" target=\"_blank\">simulations of ocean temperatures<\/a>). Julia&#8217;s role at the meeting was to represent the sponsor (NERC &#8211; the UK equivalent of Canada&#8217;s NSERC), but what impressed me about her talk was both her detailed knowledge of the project, and the way she nurtured it &#8211; she&#8217;ll make a great chief scientist.<\/p>\n<p>Julia&#8217;s research has focussed on tropical variability, particularly improving our understanding of the monsoons, but she&#8217;s also played a key role in earth system modeling, and especially in the exploration of <a title=\"Julia's talk on NERC's Earth System Modeling strategy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atm.damtp.cam.ac.uk\/shuckburgh\/ESM\/talks\/slingo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">high resolution models<\/a>. But best of all, she&#8217;s just published a very readable account of the <a title=\"Slingo et al, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. vol 367 no 1890\" href=\"http:\/\/rsta.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/367\/1890\/815.full\" target=\"_blank\">challenges in developing the next generation of climate models<\/a>.
